"Under The Radar" started in 2008 as a syndicated radio show and podcast. In 2014, it become an independent non-profit organization. But now in 2017, it's time to pivot. We are no longer built around a single radio show; we want this ministry to be a multi-media umbrella -- with content celebrating well-crafted, faith-inspired music. So the new name for the organization is UTR Media. And the first of 5 new podcasts is one that will have a ton of similar flavor to the old show, with a few new ingredients blended in as well. We are introducing the debut episode of the Gourmet Music Podcast! In this 75-minute episode, we pack in a ton of amazing songs that have been released in the last 9 months. And we guarantee you will hear at least one artist you've never heard before! NOTE: If you use the Apple Podcast platform, we will not be adding new episodes beyond this one to the old "Under The Radar" feed. You will need to subscribe to the new Gourmet Music Podcast feed. *Also available on Stitcher.
This episode is a flashback to show #183 from May 2012. We thought this could tie in well for Mother's Day Weekend. It was nice to weave in interview clips from Sara Groves, Lori Chaffer, Randall Goodgame, & Bread of Stone. Plus it's the UTR debut of Maron Gaffron who will be our next online benefit concert artist on May 10. Info on that is available at http://is.gd/utrcw.
If there's one episode that deserves a 2nd spin each year, it's our annual audio countdown of the Top 11 Gourmet Albums of the Year. Last year's list of critics' picks is an outstanding collection of gourmet music, and might make for a good entry point for someone just discovering the world of well-crafted indie music. We feature songs from the latest work by The Lone Bellow, Josh Garrels, and Jon Foreman. Who else released the BEST music of 2015? You have to listen and find out for yourself. We also allow one of our critics to pick out this week's radar rewind. (Dave)
This is a special week for me, because without Mike Farris there probably wouldn't be Under The Radar. In late 2007, I stumbled upon the Memphis-blues and soulful roots artist Mike Farris. I happened to be putting together a pretty important concert at the time, and I was so won over by Mike's music that we rented out a blues bar in downtown Nashville and booked Mike for the event. We were launching the new radio show Walk The Way at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in 2008. We bussed radio & media professionals to this blues club ... and as expected, Mike Farris blew the roof off the joint. Brian Larson, a radio General Manager from NY State, had a private conversation with me the day after that concert. He said something like, "Got an itch yet to start your own radio show? Maybe something music-focused? I tell you what, if you do a radio show like last night with Mike Farris, and play music that's not the same old thing everyone else is playing ... our radio station would air that in a heartbeat!" Those were the earliest buds of the dream that became Under The Radar! We're so proud of the attention and success that Mike has had. You might not know... he's the first artist in history to have won a Grammy, Dove, & Americana Award! (Dave)
Little know fact: On our production schedule, this week was supposed to be a rerun. Last month the idea dawned on me to do a show previewing some of the amazing artists coming to ETTL 2016, something that we've never really done in the past. One of the self-indulgent reasons why I wanted to produce this show was to feature a new (1-wk-old) song from The Gray Havens' new stellar album Ghost of a King, as well as the new single (2-mon-old) by Giants & Pilgrims. It was also fun to feature some thoughts about ETTL from artists and attendees. If you haven't yet signed up to join us this August, get more info at escapetothelake.net. ((Dave))
I found out about the music of Nick Flora on an episode of UTR where Andy Osenga was the guest co-host and picked out the music. I quickly fell in love with Nick AND his music. He was a part of the Leonard the Lonely Astronaut Tour, did a Chicagoland UTR Tour, and this summer will be a part of Escape To The Lake for the 4th consecutive year! He's a guy I can rock out to Ken Tamplin with and I could tell my deepest hurts to. He's one of the most genuine, caring, funny, kind, encouraging, and talented individuals I know. And it was an honor back on episode 286 to let him have the controls of UTR - proving that he also has exquisite taste in music. ((Dave))
This replay originally aired on 1/31/14, and it features all requests from UTR listeners. Our listeners always do a stellar job at putting playlists together, and this is no exception. The show features A+ songs by Josh Garrels, Arthur Alligood, Jars of Clay, Audrey Assad, and others. If you have a request for a future UTR, feel free to email me at Dave(at)radarradio.net. ((Dave))
