Guest Blog: Growing Up With Music

Kayla VanWyk is a senior at Trinity Christian College and just completed an internship with Under The Radar.  We loved having her on the team this last semester, and asked her to end her time with us with a blog about the role of music in her life. GROWING UP WITH MUSIC  ~ by Kayla VanWyk Dancing around the kitchen, sliding across the hardwood floors with my socks on.. that’s how I came to love music. I grew up in an environment where music was always playing, whether my family was in the car listening to my VeggieTales soundtrack cassette tape or I was outside jumping on the trampoline with …

Best Gourmet Music Videos of 2015

This is the first year that we decided to feature some of the best gourmet music videos that caught our attention in 2015.  Music videos are easy to miss these days with social media being the main vehicle for distribution.  So with the understanding that we did our best, but maybe missed a few video gems, we are thrilled to compile nine of gourmet music's best videos of 2015 all in one place.  [We specifically looked for songs that fit the UTR vibe and not just "big budget" videos.  Also we only considered "official videos" - not creative lyric videos or live acoustic performances. These are listed in no particular order.] …

Help ETTL Find A New Home

Help ETTL Find A New Home

One of the best parts of UTR's ministry is the gourmet music retreat known as Escape To The Lake.  It's been an amazing privilege to see God use this event to offer spiritual encouragement, inspire new art, and build a thriving community of music lovers and artists.  If you are associated with a retreat center or conference grounds and ever thought "Man, I wish WE could host an event like Escape To The Lake," this could be a providential moment! In October, we were notified that the host venue for the first three ETTLs decided not to continue the partnership for next year.  So we are now on the lookout for the next home for …

Guest Concert Review: The Vespers and Brady Toops

A big thanks to Joel Mendez for submitting this guest concert review! _____________ The Vespers and Brady Toops - World Café in Philadelphia, PA - Nov. 12, 2015 Philadelphia played host to an early stop in The Vespers 2015 fall tour.  The quartet of two pairs of siblings not related to each other or romantically involved with each other played in the upstairs lounge of World Café (veteran singer-songwriter Edwin McCain was performing in the downstairs). The Vespers brought special guest Brady Toops, a gifted voice in gospel and spiritual music.  The Vespers and Brady Toops are a convergence of diverse vocals and music.  In each of their performances, I was impressed …

Best Christmas Albums of 2015

Can you imagine celebrating the Christmas season without music? We can't. Certain holiday songs envoke deep-rooted memories of our childhood yuletide. Yet, if you are a music connoisseur, it's often hard to find the really good, non-cheesy, indie quality "gourmet" holiday music that's released each year.  It's becoming even harder to find as artists are more frequently releasing holiday singles, EPs, and LPs without much fanfare or promotion - sometimes even unannounced.  Well, UTR is here to help! We have hunted to find the really, really good stuff.  Now, we are pround to present the 6 Best Christmas Albums of 2015!  1. O Christmas - Gungor This beautifullly-crafted Christmas EP quietly released to the …

Has UTR Been A Blessing To You?

Has UTR Been A Blessing To You?

Do we want you to be entertained? Sure.  Do we want to be a trusted source for new musical discoveries? Of course.  But our primary goal is to present content that enriches your life spiritually.  We asked if anyone wanted to share how Under The Radar has been a blessing to them, and we were overwhelmed with the responses this month.  Here's some of the wonderful words of encouragement: "Some of the songs played on UTR Radio have been like a magnet that turns me in the right direction, especially when i'm struggling with something. A while ago I was struggling with something, and I heard Andy Gullahorn's song "Freedom" …

UTR Helps Victor To Battle Suicidal Thoughts

While the majority of UTR listeners are from the USA, you might not realize that Under The Radar is being aired on several international radio outlets, including Guam, Grenada, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Kenya (among others).  One of the people who UTR has had a major impact on is a 29-yr-old man named Victor Muthoka.  Victor lives in Nairobi, Kenya, and his life story - both past and present - is full of heartache and hardship. Victor has been battling clinical depression since 1999, and in 2001 - as a young high school student - attempted suicide, but was thankfully unsuccessful. In 2002 he joined a gang, and was …

We will be using all UTR channels to share about the impact this ministry is having, so be on the lookout on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, email, and podcast for updates. Our goal is to raise $10,000 in brand new support for UTR in this one week. One person isn't going to cut us a $10,000 check …

Concert Review: Andrew Peterson in Sugar Grove IL

This guest concert review comes from Kayla Van Wyk, UTR's intern this semester who is currently a senior at Trinity Christian College. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This past Friday, October 23, Under the Radar welcomed Andrew Peterson, joined by Eric Peters, at Village Bible Church in Sugar Grove, IL. As UTR’s intern, I had the privilege of helping out at and attending the concert. Now, to be completely honest, I had heard very little of Andrew’s music; I’d only heard a couple of songs on UTR podcasts. But, I could tell from the minute I arrived at the concert venue that this was going to be a great experience for me. First, I generally love …
