This Week's Artist: Josh Garrels

Josh Garrels’ music defies easy categorization. He once described it as hip hop and soul, rooted in the Delta Blues and west African rhythm, with an infusion of folk. In addition to his unique style, the musicianship, production, and penetrating lyrics give you a sense of excitement and a longing for transformation.

Around the mid-2000’s record labels became interested in Josh’s music and he turned down every offer.  He felt like he would loose some of his love and passion for music if he started with a label run by “the big man”.  He wants to walk the path of a musician slowly, learning with every step, and preparing for what lies ahead.  Last year Josh wrote about the label he has started with his wife, Michelle.

“This label will grow as we grow, and as we build this house, slowly, with our own hands we'll add on when there's need. Eventually, others will come from near and far, and take part in this work with us. Our front porch will be the make-shift platform as we stomp our feet and sing stories of the beauty and truth we've found together. The wind will carry the echoes of these homespun hymns wherever it pleases, and perhaps in a quiet moment there will be some who will pause, and listen...and be pleased.” (http://www.joshgarrels.blogspot.com/)
